For the first time in my life, I attended an auction. Today, Melody, Emaline, and I went to the Fat Man’s “pre-demolition” auction: a cultural experience of ridiculous proportions! Like a scene from a movie, a fast talking man with a bullhorn rapidly and rhythmically spouted off numbers and instructions, conjuring up responses of audience hand-waving and hollerin’. Let me tell you…it was totally insane!
First, let me say that Fat Man’s is a great store- a landmark for locals. I, like many, have childhood memories doing my holiday shopping…and even more recent memories picking out decorations with my wife. I’m sad that Fat Man’s is leaving. It’s the end of an era and will truly be missed.
Now…back to the auction…
So, having never been to an auction before, culture shock struck pretty hard. Thankfully, we met a nice lady (I never caught her name) who actually did bidding on our behalf for our first desired item: a vintage mirror. It was a success. Refusing payment to reimburse the bid, the kind anonymous women gave the mirror to us as a gift for our daughter. Very cool.
With a bit of courage, I attempted to bid on my own for the next set of items: a collection of outdoor planters. I was outbid by a woman who exceeded our maximum…slightly tragic. I was later outbid by my neighbor for a cool wheelbarrow!!!
Not to be defeated, with reckless gusto I won the bid for 2 shovels, an axe, and a wood splitter (package deal).
Now I gotta figure out something to dig, chop, and split.

So sad to hear about Fat Man’s. It really was a landmark for AUG. Glad you got some goods!
